Asian Handicap Odds
Asian handicap is a type of betting on football teams that are handicapped according to the form of the team, so a stronger team must win by scoring more goals for a punter betting on the team to win. The system’s origins are from Indonesia and it has been getting popular in the last fey years. It is a type of spread betting. The handicaps usually range from one-quarter goal to many or several goals. This can be in increments of half- or quarter- goals.
It is important that handicap betting reduces the total possible number of outcomes from just three, which is in traditional 1x2 betting to two, by eliminating the draw outcome. This simplification realizes two betting options that have just about a 50% win rate each.
Asian handicaps help bookmakers by minimizing the risk by facilitating trading or balancing the amount of betting on the sides of the match. This helps bookmakers to take better positions on major matches. This type of betting, however offers lower margins that do not contribute as much to the gross win as the other types of betting, like 1X2.
The term itself was coined by the journalist Joe Smith in 1998. Joe Smith was asked by an Indonesian bookmaker named Joe Phan, to translate the method of betting that was named in Indonesia “hang cheng betting” by the Asian bookmakers
